18 Things I Would Tell My Younger Self

Tuesday 29 December 2015

Hey you, you're doing great... now just relax, and stop taking everything so seriously.

1. Stop worrying about the future.
Your older self still is trying to figure out the future, so just leave that one to me. I'll get there soon.

2. Boys are useless. Don't worry about them.
Honestly, do not stress over silly boys. They're not worth your tears, and seriously your time will come.

3. Eat as much as you want, of what you want, and when you want.
No, seriously! Appreciate the fact that you can eat crap and not have to worry about it all piling on your hips. You have your whole life ahead of you to consider eating green things such as kale and avocado...

4. Do what you want to do, not what someone wants you to do.
Stop trying to convince yourself that you should go down a certain career path if it's not for you. Life is too short to not enjoy what you're doing.

5. That sweeping side fringe is doing nothing for you. Get rid of that.
Not that you'll listen anyway, but the sooner you realise it the better.

6. Start taking care of your skin, you'll thank yourself in the years to come.
I mean, it's okay to occasionally drunkenly fall asleep with your make up on. Put down those nasty lil' make-up wipes, they're doing nothing for you. Just give your skin some TLC from time to time, you'll thank yourself if you do.

7. Be nice to people.
You don't know what people are going through, or suffering with. It's nice to be nice to people. Even those who aren't so nice. Kill them with kindness.

8. Challenge things. Speak up. Let yourself be heard.
Don't just go along with what everyone tells you, even your teachers - challenge them!

9. Read more. Your vocabulary will expand and your writing will flourish.
You can never read enough. Read everything and anything. From J.K to Joyce, do it.

10. Stop colouring your hair. With a box dye. They nasty.
Just stop. Stop right now. Your hair will become brittle and you'll have to cut those long locks off.

11. Start saving!
That part time job you have - yeah, well start saving. Even if it's just a little bit. Money doesn't burn holes in your pocket. And your bank account will thank you for it.

12. Learn to say no.
Don't feel bad about it either. Don't want to do something, say no. Simple. I mean, it's not simple. The little voice in your head will make you feel guilty. But, tell it to be quiet.

13. Your family is pretty cool, I mean, totally abnormal, but you wouldn't have them any other way.
Love your family. They all mean well, they just may not say things in the right way sometimes, but they're humans. Oh, and love your parents. They're pretty darn special people.

14. Sleep as much as you can.
There will come a time when you cannot sleep in till 10/11am. So cherish that time. Honestly.

15. Everything happens for a reason.
Didn't get that grade you wanted? Fallen out with a friend? Going through that hellish break-up? It will all shape you to be the woman you are today. You're stronger than you'll ever know, and it all happens for a wider reason. Just trust me on this one.

16. Wear your friggin' retainer at night.
Just please listen to me on this one. Even if you don't listen to anything else.

17. Quality over quantity - every time.
Not in a huge group of friends? Who cares. It's all about the quality of those friends. Make lasting friendships, not shallow friendships. Oh, this applies to essays too. Stop that flowering waffling you do, it will get you rubbish grades.

18. Trust your gut instinct.
It's not been wrong thus far, you should give it some more credit.

What would you tell your younger self? Let me know in the comments below!
